Shark Fining

Do you think that people should be killing sharks JUST for their fins?

I think shark fining should be illegal worldwide. It is a cruel and wasteful thing that fishermen are doing just for the shark's fins. Most of the fisherman don't care and just do it for the money and I think it has to stop.

The process for catching the sharks is by long lining. The fishing lines can be up to 100 km long, and are pulled out to sea behind a boat. The fishing lines can have tens of thousands of baited hooks on them.When the lines get pulled in, there are sharks and many other sea creatures that get killed and thrown back into the sea.

When the sharks get hauled into the boat they are given a blow to the spine that paralyses them and makes it easier to cut off the fins. When they cut off the fins they use a machete to hack them off.Then they are returned to the ocean and are often alive and unable to move,  they sink to the bottom of the ocean and die of suffocation or get eaten by other predators.

Over the past 30 to 40 years species have had a huge drop in population around the world. But in NZ the great white shark has been given full protection in the territorial waters of New Zealand. But shark fining is legal on other shark species if the shark is dead. On the 10th of November 2013 an announcement was made by the conservation minister saying shark fining will be outlawed in New Zealand.

Shark fining at sea enables fishing vessels to increase profitability and the number of sharks being killed. Some countries have banned shark fining at sea and made it so the whole shark has to be brought back to land before removing the fins.

People who are involved in the shark fining trade or who enjoy eating shark fin soup often argue that shark fining shouldn't be banned because sharks are harmful to humans. But did you know you are 16 times more likely to be struck by lightning than to be bitten by a shark?

In conclusion I think shark fining should be illegal world wide, it is a cruel and atrocious thing that fisherman are doing and if somebody doesn’t do something about it it will never stop. Would you kill a shark just for the fins?

Term 2 Writing Samples!!!

This term we have been looking at ways to make our writing more interesting for the reader.

We have used the folllowing criteria to guide us:

• Changing the word order of a sentence
• Using literary devices such as metaphor, simile, alliteration, onomatopoeia and  personification
• Using specific verbs and adjectives
• Using  show, don’t tell techniques
• Using different sentence beginnings and lengths

Emotions

Angry: As Oakley laid the ball to me I sprinted at it got control of it and headed for the goal. I shot, it was heading for the top left corner, as it bounced of the crossbar I erupted like a volcano and my face was red hot like lava.

Sad: I was crying as hard as I had ever cried before. My tears sprayed over my body it felt like I was having a shower. By the time I had calmed down I was drenched in tears. I opened the door and walked down the hallway. “What's wrong hon”. “Cameron’s what's wrong” I replied. “He’s a total idiot, and I mean it”.

Happy: It was christmas day. I was the most HAPPIEST person in the world. I got chocolates, clothes and a whole lot of other stuff. But earlier in the morning I found a note on the table saying “there might be something in the shed”.So after I opened my smaller presents I went out to the shed. When I got to the shed I opened the door and there leaning against wall was a Scott Genius LT Plus. It was amazing.

The Butterfly and the Baby Bear……

In The Hall Of The Mountain King!!!

On a cold misty morning a Baby Bear is slowly waking. A butterfly flutters and dips  around the leaves surrounding baby bear.  

Baby Bear sees the butterfly out the corner of his eye and rolls his head around as it flies in circles. The Baby bear squeals and jumps up and down.

Baby Bear’s mother hadn't realized that he had woken up

As the Bear and the Butterfly were playing the baby bear hears rustling and thrashing sounds in the bushes and slows to a complete stop. Out of nowhere a huge male grizzly was standing in front of the There was nothing he could do, but there was something that the butterfly could do. Quickly the butterfly reacted and flew into the bear's ear, making the grizzly bear angry and annoyed. As the butterfly was doing that the baby bear had ran and got his mother that was freaking out trying to find him. And in the end the big men grizzly bear had walked off confused about what just happened and the baby bear and butterfly were fine!!!

Viking Girl

She slams the door and looks into a little mirror in her room and yells “ why does nobody like my viking costume” as she stares into the mirror with her eyebrows down and eyes facing up. She sees her older brother pushing the door open slowly. As quick as lightning she ramms the door shut with her viking helmet. Two holes appear in the door, she hears stomping as her mum stomps up the stairs. She feels sad and starts to cry.

Tired / Dizzy I awoke from my sleep. I looked at my alarm clock, the last time I looked at it it was 11:42 and know it was 11:51, I had 9 minutes of sleep. I took my covers off me and went down to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. My eyes were bloodshot and it looked liked a bird had made a nest in my hair. I felt so sleepy and drained, i needed a drink. So I went to the fridge and got the jug fuel of water out. As I tipped some of the water into the cup I started to feel dizzy and as that was happening I realized that had spilt half the jug full of water onto the bench.

Crushing can's with Miss Green!!!

On Friday room 17 went to room 16 to do a science experiment. When we did the science experiment we boiled 1.5 centimetres of water in a 330ml can by lighting mentholated spirits and putting the can over it. When it had boiled Miss Green got a bowl of water with ice in it picked the can up with tongs flipped it over and put it in the icy water. About half a second after she put it in it imploded. It happened because a huge vacuum pulling all the air out of the can. This is what it looked like when it was finished!!!!

These are my times for cross country!!!

This is my cross country times of running once around the school block
If you don't get the graph it is in 24 hour time.
For example, 15:40 is 3 minutes and 40 seconds.

It was a long tiring run. Me and Cole Mc were running together and came 8th at the same time. Oakley came first, Zac came second and Konrad came third. The first ten made it into the inter school X-country.

This is my scary house story!!!!

The house

As I walked closer to the house the light flickered and went out. I stopped and rethought my decision about walking into a house with broken windows and and murky lights that turn off when you come close to them. But I had made my decision I was going in. I walked swiftly towards the creaking door, it was like walking into a horror movie, this was the most scariest thing i had done in my life. As I pushed open the half broken door I heard a clicking noise, i turned around, there standing at the bottom of the steps was a man. He had cocked his gun and now was pointing it at me. The man had greasy black curly hair that went down to his shoulders and a big black coat that went down to his ankles.

Survivor day Poem

The sound of marvelous teachers muttering as they walk around the muddy camp.

Making  mad campers move mysteriously from tent to tent as they wake more and more miserable campers.

As the rain flooded the man made shelters, the kids moved out and fled into the magnificent classrooms.

I hear kids   as they hear the big bangs and booms when the digger moves around.

The iron roof gets torn off it’s resting place as the big

digger crunches it up.

                                        As the big mean digger bowls over the walls.

I hear

When the workers turn on the water.

 

The big skip bin slides off the truck and onto the ground.

I hear As the digger dumps the wood and metal into the skip bin.
